My life began behind the Iron Curtain. Even though by the time I was in my teens we all had passports, travel still wasn’t very accessible. The idea of travel is something I had to discover for myself as I grew older and experienced more. I moved to London when I was 19 and all of the sudden I was surrounded by new cultures and new friends who had taken gap years to explore the world. And yet it wasn’t until I was 26 that I got a chance to take my first transatlantic flight. I have been making up for lost time ever since!
For me travel has never been about ticking boxes on a list, rather it’s about an experience and a new perspective. It could be as broad as seeing an amazing new creature while scuba diving, hearing new sounds, or eating something new. Most often it is just about the feeling you have when you’re away from your every day; and something feels different.
2020 has been so hard, so many travel pLans fell through. I managed to explore Devon in the UK for a week, which turned out to be just as satisfying as any far away destination. Maybe I needed a global pandemic to take me back to the beginning, and remind me that travel is not always about the distance you go, but how much you appreciate your freedom and ability to go somewhere new.
