Jo Wilcock
I was born in Sydney, Australia but relocated to Saudi Arabia with my family when I was 4.
My earliest memories are all from Saudi: the colours, the smell of the souks and the sound of the call to prayer. The Middle East is a long way from suburban Sydney.
I was lucky to experience two different cultures growing up which broadened my experience of the world from an early age. Returning to Australia, my teenage years were filled with hot summers, cicadas and camping holidays. My love affair with the outdoors began in the Blue Mountains and has inspired me to explore some spectacular locations from Iceland’s Þingvellir National Park to the Cinque Terre in Italy. This photo was taken while hiking near the Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Italian Dolomites. It is a remarkable area not only for its natural beauty but because it was the scene of trench warfare during World War 1. Taking in the scenery and the history brings you a little closer to understanding humanity. That is what motivates me to travel. The more I explore the more I realise I need to explore – the travellers curse!
